AI explanation
Understand the step-by-step, not just the result. The AI explains the reasoning.
How the AI OCR works
Photograph the expression
Open the app, tap the AI tab and select Photo mode. Frame the math expression — it can be a piece of paper, a whiteboard or an open book. The camera accepts both handwritten and printed expressions.
AI recognises and interprets
The image is sent to Gemini Flash Vision, Google's vision model, which identifies mathematical symbols accurately — including fractions, radicals, powers and trigonometric functions. Post-processing normalises the expression for the calculation engine.
Result with explanation
The result appears instantly. Tap 'Explain with AI' to receive a detailed step-by-step breakdown of the reasoning — just like a teacher would explain on the board.
Supported expression types
- Basic operations: +, −, ×, ÷
- Powers and radicals: x², √x, ³√x
- Trigonometric functions: sin, cos, tan, arcsin
- Logarithms: log, ln
- Linear equations with one variable: 3x − 2 = 16
- Expressions with nested parentheses
- Constants: π, e
Tips for best results
- Use good lighting — natural light or a well-lit room
- Keep the camera steady and the expression centred in the frame
- Clear handwriting works best: avoid letters that are too close or overlapping
- For fractions, write the numerator clearly above the division line
- Printed expressions (books, printed sheets) have a higher recognition rate
Frequently asked questions
Does recognition work offline?
No. The OCR uses a cloud AI model (Gemini Flash Vision), so it requires an internet connection to process the image.
Is the AI calculator different from the scientific calculator?
Yes. The scientific calculator works entirely offline by typing expressions. The AI Calculator uses the phone camera to capture and solve photographed expressions.
Do I need a Premium subscription to use OCR?
The first few queries are free. The Premium plan offers unlimited OCR queries and AI explanations without restrictions.
Does the app work on iOS?
CalcSim AI is currently available on Android only. iOS support is in development.
