Financial calculator

What is the Financial Calculator and what is it for?

The CalcSim AI Financial Calculator is inspired by the legendary HP 12C — the most widely used financial calculator in the world, present in exams, finance courses and trading desks for decades. We bring that same power to your phone, with the TVM (Time Value of Money) registers you already know.

The central idea is simple: every financial problem involves 5 variables. You provide 4 of them and the calculator finds the fifth automatically.

The 5 TVM variables

n

Periods

Number of installments or months in the contract.

i%

Rate

Interest rate per period (usually per month).

PV

Present Value

Initial capital: amount financed or invested today.

PMT

Payment

Periodic installment: how much goes in or out each month.

FV

Future Value

Ending balance: how much is left or owed at the end.

Practical examples

4 everyday situations solved

🚗

Example 1

Calculate a loan installment

You want to finance a $50,000 car with a $10,000 down payment, over 48 months at 1.5% per month. What is the monthly payment?

What to enter

n48months
i%1.5% per month
PV40,000financed amount
FV0ending balance
PMTTap here without entering anything

Result

$1,175.08

per month

Tip: PV is positive (money you receive from the bank). PMT will be negative — money you pay.

📅

Example 2

Find out how long to pay off a debt

You owe $10,000 and can pay $400 per month. The rate is 2.5% per month. In how many months do you pay it off?

What to enter

i%2.5% per month
PV10,000outstanding balance
PMT-400payment/month
FV0ending balance
nTap here without entering anything

Result

40 months

≈ 3 years and 4 months

Tip: PMT is negative because it is a cash outflow (you are paying). PV is positive because it is an inflow (you received the loan).

📊

Example 3

Calculate the real interest rate

You split $5,000 into 12 installments of $500. What is the interest rate charged?

What to enter

n12installments
PV5,000financed amount
PMT-500installment
FV0ending balance
i%Tap here without entering anything

Result

2.92%

per month

Tip: Multiply by 12 to get the nominal annual rate: ≈ 35.1% per year. Most stores don't disclose this number — now you know how to calculate it.

💰

Example 4

Project a monthly investment

You invest $500 per month for 24 months at 0.8% per month. How much will you have at the end?

What to enter

n24months
i%0.8% per month
PV0no initial value
PMT-500monthly contribution
FVTap here without entering anything

Result

$13,172

accumulated value

Tip: PV = 0 because you have no initial amount. PMT is negative because you are investing (money leaving your pocket).

FAQ

Questions about the Financial Calculator

Why does the installment result come out negative?+

Because the Financial Calculator uses the cash flow convention: money that leaves your pocket is negative. Negative PMT = you are paying. To see the value without the sign, just ignore the − symbol.

Do I need to clear the registers between calculations?+

Yes! Always tap "f REG" (or the Clear All button in the app) before starting a new TVM calculation. Old values are stored and will distort the result.

What format does the rate need to be in?+

Always enter the rate as a percentage number — not as a decimal. For 1.5% per month, type 1.5 and press i%. Never 0.015.

Can I calculate installments with a grace period?+

Yes. For a grace period of k months, add k to the n value or adjust the PV by the future value of the grace period. The AI Professor can guide you through specific calculations.

Does the calculator work without internet?+

Both the scientific calculator and the Financial Calculator work 100% offline. Only the AI explanation and the AI Professor need a connection.
